Mapping Mountains - Publications

Mapping Mountains now has a sister website - Mapping Mountains Publications.  This new site will publish hill lists in booklet format, available to either download or print.  It has been set-up as non-profit making and accessing these lists will incur no cost.

The first list now available is Y Pellennig – The Remotest Hills of Wales, with another two lists planned for publication during 2016 and 2017.  These listings are prominence based and it is this criterion that will lead the choice of future publications.

Accessing prominence based hill lists in booklet format, at little or no cost, was pioneered by Alan Dawson and Dave Hewitt with their TACit Tables publications, and continued into the digital age by Mark Trengove via his Europeaklist website.  It is hoped that Mapping Mountains Publications will also benefit those interested in objective based listings.

It is thanks to Mark that this new site has been set-up, as he initiated the publishing of a number of co-authored lists with Aled Williams, and it is these lists that will ultimately be transferred to the Publications site.  Along with Mark, Ruth Magness and Aled Williams should be given special thanks for their valued contributions and encouragement.

Producing a hill list from compilation to publication takes a lot of work and time and under-estimating the publication date can be all too common, but with Y Pellennig – The Remotest Hills of Wales now published, it is hoped that The Fours – The 400m Hills of England, and Y Pedwarau – The 400m Hills of Wales can follow suit before the end of 2017.  Each will be updated with the latest survey results and place-name research, and it is the intention to publish other hill lists as and when research is completed.
