Fan y Big – Press Coverage

The news that Fan y Big has been deleted from the listing of Hewitts (Hill in England, Wales or Ireland over Two Thousand feet high (609.6m) with a drop of at least 30m (98.4ft) all round, has been well received by a number of media outlets and neatly balances the coverage between the Nuttalls and the Hewitts, both of which I believe are excellent lists.

Fan y Big

The demotion of Fan y Big has been covered by online media, traditional newspapers and radio, with a TV appearance of the surveyor (that’s me) only being usurped by a horse that run amok at the Pembroke show resulting in BBC Wales’ outdoor broadcast van having to be repositioned at short notice, however BBC Radio Wales had already invited me to talk about Fan y Big on their Good Evening Wales programme, and this coupled with a number of online sites reproducing a photo of me looking much younger than I do in a mirror helped save the day!

The online coverage included the Daily Mail, Metro, BBC Wales, ITV Wales, UKHillwalking, Wales Online, Countryfile magazine, Sky News, CNN, Yahoo! News, Brecon and Radnor Express and the Shropshire Star, and thanks to CNN it even made the Hawaii News, with The Times and the Daily Mirror also covering the news in their newspapers.  But once the Associated Press picked up on the news Fan y Big seemed to go global with amongst others the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post and New York Times covering the news.

The contrasting nature of press coverage is summed up by a piece in my local online news outlet; My Welshpool, and by coverage of Fan y Big on the Channel 5 News, one being local and the other national, and both being extremely good.  On the day that Channel 5 News filmed from the summit of Fan y Big, Radio 1 covered the news and later prioritised it for their daily Podcast.

I would like to express my thanks to Aled Williams for the initial LIDAR analysis of Fan y Big, Alan Dawson as author of the Welsh Hewitts for acceptance of this result and kindly giving a number of quotes, and to Dan Bailey at UKHIllwalking for continued support.
