In November 2015, the ‘Welsh 500m P15s’ were introduced via an article published on Mapping Mountains. This list is co-authored by Myrddyn Phillips
and Aled Williams and the introductory article concentrated on details relating
to the criteria, history, hill names and regional split of the qualifying
hills. It also stated that it was hoped
that the list in its entirety would be published within five years.
The list was introduced
as ‘The Welsh 500m P15s’ with an extended title stating:
All hills in Wales at or above 500m in height with a minimum
prominence of 15m; from the 500m summit of Esgair Saeson to the 1085m summit of
Yr Wyddfa.
This brief synopsis serves
as a progress update in our efforts to prepare this list for full publication. As co-authors we have published a number of
hill lists over recent years in booklet form, including ‘Y Pedwarau – The 400m
Hills of Wales’, ‘The Fours – The 400m Hills of England’ and ‘Y Pellennig – The
Remotest Hills of Wales’. From the
outset we envisaged that this latest list would be our most challenging to
fully publish, based on the following reasons:

We
aim to publish in book format.

The
list will be accompanied by our extensive numerical and place-name research.
In all there are 631
hills that currently qualify for the main list.
The overall sub totals
are currently 94 and this is an increase of five hills compared to the total in
November 2015.
The current working
title for the book is ‘The Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru’, which we hope to
publish in the foreseeable future.
