Mapping Mountains – Trimble Surveys – Fforest Glud

I hadn’t been on the higher Fforest Glud hills since 2005.  Prior to my last visit the circuit taking in Bache Hill, Black Mixen and Great Rhos was one I used to do on a regular basis.  Sixteen years is a long time to have neglected these hills.  Since my last visit my surveying activities have become more refined.  Where I then used a basic levelling staff to measure the drop value for potential P15 and P30 hills, I now have a Trimble which is capable of producing highly accurate height data. 

When purchasing the Trimble there were a number of summits and also bylchau of note that I wanted to survey.  Many of these have now taken place; including Foel Cedig and Cyrniau Nod, the bwlch for Great Rhos and Pegwn Mawr, Foel Penolau in the Rhinogydd and the high point of the main easternmost ridge of Mynyddoedd Duon, there are others still awaiting to be surveyed.  One of these is Bache Hill; a heather bound summit adjacent to land reclaimed for grazing and a large conifer plantation.

Bache Hill is given a 610m summit spot height on contemporary Ordnance Survey maps.  This height is adjoined to a triangulation pillar which has a 610.209m flush bracket height.  The flush bracket is positioned approximately 0.35m above the base of the trig pillar.  Therefore, the ground at the base of the trig pillar is approximately 609.859m.  This height is only 0.26m above the benchmark height of 2,000ft (609.6m).  However, the trig pillar is positioned on top of an ancient tumulus, which I had surveyed with my old basic levelling staff as being approximately 9ft (2.7m) in height. 

Tumuli are man-made and were built in the Bronze Age and therefore are approximately 5,000 years old, because of this many hill list authors consider them as being a part of the hill and therefore accept their height as that for the summit, even if a lower, natural summit still exists.  However, there are some people who do not accept this, and would give the height and position to the remaining natural summit, even if the tumulus is higher.  Today one of the main surveying objectives was the summit of Bache Hill. 

Since the late 1990s when I first started surveying hills I have looked at summits and bylchau with a surveyor’s eye.  Whereas prior to this a summit was to be bagged and the view admired, now I spend time assessing the lay of land.  Although I hadn’t been to the summit of Bache Hill for sixteen years I was aware that there seemed to be higher natural ground westward from where the trig pillar and tumulus is positioned, and as the approximate height of the tumulus is 9ft (2.7m) and with the flush bracket height giving the ground at the base of the trig pillar as approximately 609. 859m, these values give the natural ground at the base of the tumulus as approximately 607.159m in height.  This is below 2,000ft.  Was the natural summit of this hill to the west of the tumulus and if so was it sufficiently higher than the base of the tumulus to break through the 2,000ft (609.6m) barrier.  My thoughts prior to today’s survey were that the natural summit was intact and to the west of the tumulus and that it is below 2,000ft (609.6m) in height. 

Having met Aled in Caersŵs we were parked and walking from above Maesyfed (New Radnor) by just past 9.00am, following the bridleway heading north and then eastward above Mutton Dingle.  It was already warm, but with blue skies above and a forecast for dry conditions and little breeze it was ideal for the task at hand. 

We left the bridleway to visit the summit of Knowle Hill, which stands aloof of the conifer plantation to its north.  I’d often used this ascent route whilst combining the three highest Radnorshire hills, but until today had never visited the high point of this hill.

Prior to this visit I had LIDARed this hill and found a remaining natural bwlch to the west of the raised track that continues to the forestry track which if so desired eventually leads to Whimble and Bache Hill.  Having arrived at the top of the closely cropped grazing field that constitutes the summit of Knowle Hill we assessed the lay of land and soon the Trimble was set up gathering its first data set of the day.

Leaving the summit of Knowle Hill we headed down to the raised track crossing the area of the bwlch and continued up the near forestry track, turning right on a gravelled narrower track which led up toward another forestry track and open hillside beyond.  Even at this early stage of the walk I felt the heat debilitating.  I had planned to join Aled and visit Whimble; a fine hill that I had visited on four previous occasions, the last of which it had been Trimbled.  The phrase of the Trimble on Whimble still makes me smile.  But realising there were many surveys ahead and that Aled is much quicker around the hills than me, I left him to make his way up Whimble as I steadily plodded up a green track toward the summit of Bache Hill.

I knew before arriving at the summit what I wanted to do and that was to take the first data set from the highest ground at the base of the tumulus and another three at the base and approximately 45° from each other.  One data set from the high point of the tumulus and at least one from the area where I suspected the natural summit to be placed westward of the tumulus.

Arriving at the summit I set to work.  The tumulus is impressive and dominates the summit area of the hill and is one of the finest of its kind in this part of Wales.  I soon had the Trimble set up at what I judged to be the highest ground at the immediate base of the tumulus.  I then repeated this process and took three other readings at the base, each approximately 90° from one another.  This would give a good spread of the height of the base of the tumulus.  Using one’s eye to ascertain height gain is not ideal, however having judged the lay of land for many hundreds of hills one becomes attuned to such things, and to my eye the tumulus is positioned on what could be deemed as the easternmost edge of this hill’s summit plateau.  Land hereabouts descended east, whilst to the west land seemed to be higher.  This is where I had previously thought the natural summit of the hill to be positioned.  Aled also thought this when he arrived at the summit after his ascent of Whimble and a scramble up Whinyard Rocks.

As Aled approached the summit of Bache Hill the Trimble was in the process of collecting data from the high point of the tumulus.  Once data were gathered and stored we looked west and under Aled’s direction I marched off in to the heather to a point north-westward of the tumulus.  This point was on a slight rise, but there was still higher ground to the west.  Having set the Trimble up and gathered the allotted data I headed to the area where we both thought the natural summit of the hill to be positioned.

This whole area is broad, however once at the place where we each thought the highest natural ground of the hill to be situated, I looked back toward the tumulus and trig pillar and followed the lay of land as it gently descended northward and southward, with the position we were now at being the crest of the land heading directly toward the tumulus.  A further two data sets were taken from this area, giving in all eight data sets from the summit area of Bache Hill.

Leaving the summit of Bache Hill we headed down to its connecting bwlch with Black Mixen.  This is placed near a fence and beside a series of small reed infested pools.  As I assessed the lay of land Aled gained height on the green track that would lead us up to our next two hills.  From this vantage point he directed me to where the bwlch lay.

Our next objective was Great Creigiau; a hill whose delights I had previously visited, once to purposely bag its summit, and the other when I wandered its heathery realm chasing Broken Spectres and a cloud inversion.  Today this hill was on Aled’s surveying agenda.  The underfoot conditions proved torturous with heather, bog, tussocks and holes.  Walking toward its high point was like swaying on a ship’s deck during a storm.  But when a hill is on a surveying agenda it has to be surveyed, and both its summit and bwlch were duly Trimbled.

Now back on the green track we followed this around the top of Cwm Siân to the trig pillar perched on the tumulus atop Black Mixen.  It was here that Aled shot off again, as he wanted to visit Fron Wen which is immersed in the northerly conifer plantation and would entail lost height which would then have to be reclaimed.  We made plans to meet beside the trig pillar on Great Rhos in 60 – 90 minutes time.

This left me at the summit of Black Mixen to gather the next data set of the day.  As the Trimble quietly beeped away gathering its all-important data I sat on the side of the summit tumulus and waved across to three contractors who were on the large mast close to the summit.  Music and singing accompanied there work, which added a surreal element to the day’s proceedings.

The next point to survey was the connecting bwlch between Black Mixen and Great Rhos.  A path through the heather leads from the tumulus atop Black Mixen all the way to this bwlch.  As the previous two weeks had been unusually wet for this time of year the path was muddied but the underfoot conditions were never difficult. 

The continuation of this path crosses the bwlch at an ancient Cross Dyke.  The path was at least 1m above ground at its base, with it acting as a raised walkway that was under filled.  Wanting to get to the summit of Great Rhos before Aled, as we had made provisional plans to either meet there or down at the bwlch connecting with Fron Hill, I didn’t want him getting to the summit before me and thinking that I had already left.  So one data set from this bwlch would, for now, have to suffice.

It was good to be back on these hills after such a long gap between my visits.  Stretches of land between frequently visited hills can bring back so many memories and this next section in particular brought back memories of struggling in the snow when the outer crust just held my weight but only until I transferred it to my other leg and in I then sank, a frustrating process that continued all the way from this bwlch around the corner of the near forestry plantation.  This forest has now been felled and as I made progress toward the corner and then up following the fence line toward where a path emerges out of the forest, I watched a number of birds of prey circling the upper reaches of Harley Dingle. 

A muddied path now led all the way to the high point of Great Rhos, I stopped on occasion and looked back to see if Aled was heading my way.  No sign yet, so I slowly continued toward the trig pillar atop the summit. 

Having assessed the lay of land beside the trig pillar I placed the Trimble atop my rucksack, measured the offset between its internal antenna and the ground at its base and set it to gather data.  I then sat in the heather about 20 metres away and left it quietly beeping away gathering data.  During this Aled appeared heading my way on the muddied path.  It was good to see him again; he’d done well considering the lost height when visiting Fron Wen.

Once the allotted data were gathered and stored we followed paths and tracks down from Great Rhos toward the connecting bwlch with Fron Hill, only stopping for a welcome rest overlooking Davy Morgan’s Dingle. 

At the bwlch Aled headed up to visit Fron Hill whilst I slowly made my way down the continuation of the green track heading in to the lower reaches of Harley Dingle.  I stopped frequently to take photographs as shadows played across the hills.  From this direction Whimble always looks good; although lower in height its profile dominates the surrounding landscape.

I waited for Aled beside the foot bridge that crosses the stream in the lower part of Harley Dingle and lay in the sun relaxing and resting.  In all 16 data sets were taken during the day with many results being of interest, especially so for Bache Hill.  Aled soon joined me after his visit to Fron Hill; he’d covered much more height and distance than me during the day.

Our route back now headed slightly uphill joining a delightful green track that contoured its way around the southerly flank of Whimble before we used fields and gates to head back toward the awaiting car.  It had been a long day, but also a very enjoyable one on the hill.

Mapping Mountains – Trimble Surveys – Fforest Glud and Hirddywel

It was only a short walk down a vehicle track heading toward the rail line through the parched land of a field to where I wanted to gather Trimble data from.  Thankfully all was quiet as I went about my business; I had consulted the timetable before deciding which bwlch to survey first and no trains were planned to use this track for the next 80 minutes.  However, as I placed the Trimble atop my rucksack to give it elevation above its immediate surrounds and measured the offset between its internal antenna and the ground below, I was conscious that I should not linger.

Thankfully the Trimble attained its 0.1m accuracy level before data should be logged in the customary quick way, and once it was activated to gather data I stood back and counted the seconds to when the allocated five minutes of data were collected and stored.  I then switched the equipment off, took a number of photographs from different directions and packed the Trimble away, gathered up my rucksack, and opened the gate giving me access back in to the field leading toward my car.

Once on the minor lane I walked past my car and up the track toward Maylord farm as I wanted to gather a data set from where the current listed position of this bwlch is given, and even though this was visually much higher on the hill to hill traverse it would complete all necessary surveys for this bwlch position.

The critical point of this higher position is placed beside the gravel track leading to Maylord farm, and as the Trimble beeped away in the morning sunshine I gained height to its north-east and took a series of photographs looking back down on its position, that of my car and the rail line below.  Once five minutes of data were gathered I closed the Trimble down, packed it away and headed back to my car for the drive north to the outskirts of Llangurig where the northerly bwlch is placed.

LIDAR covers this northerly bwlch although its analysis is not as easy as many other bylchau I have looked at over recent months, the reason for this is that the A 470 road has elevated the ground it is built on and the disused railway has created a cutting.  However, extensive LIDAR analysis led me to believe that the natural bwlch is still intact and I came prepared with three ten figure grid references and their respective heights produced by LIDAR analysis.

The first position to survey was where LIDAR places the natural bwlch, the second is a remaining natural bwlch that is higher on the hill to hill traverse and therefore not the natural bwlch, with this second point having been recently terra-formed by the introduction of wide gravelled tracks, and the third position is where the valley to valley traverse meets in the railway cutting.

I parked on the wide gravelled track which heads up toward Maesgwyn farm, from here a public footpath heads across the field to where the natural bwlch is positioned, as I was entering the field a large wagon chugged its way down the gravel track and stopped beside my car and the diver shouted over that it was best that I park in the near lay-by as vehicles would be using the track during the next few hours, I duly moved my car and proceeded to walk back on the road to gain access to the gate leading in to the field.

By now the sun was increasing in strength and even though all I did was walk on relatively level ground it brought beads of sweat to my brow, the blue of the sky was radiant above and as I went about this next series of surveys, cars hurtled past on the A 470, all blissfully unaware of the unusual proceedings being conducted in the field next to the road!

The ten figure grid reference produced by LIDAR analysis zeroed me in to the critical and natural bwlch and once the Trimble had been set up I gathered 11 minutes of data.  I was not the only one in the field as a herd of cows were slowly grazing their way toward where the Trimble was placed, thankfully none came too close and the survey proceeded without any difficulty.

LIDAR analysis also indicates that there is another remaining natural bwlch that is higher on the hill to hill traverse and therefore not the natural bwlch, and whilst here I thought I should also gather data from this second point, which I duly did.  This second point is where ground has recently been disturbed through the construction of either a new track or the widening of existing tracks, and another five minutes of data were gathered from this position.

All that remained was to gather a data set from the disused rail cutting; thankfully a gate gives easy access to this from the main road close to where my car was parked.  And again the ten figure grid reference obtained from LIDAR analysis directed me to the critical point, as this was deep in an overgrown cutting I decided that 15 minutes of data should be gathered, and whilst the Trimble did its stuff I tried to persuade one of three grazing cows that it did not want to eat the Trimble, thankfully once it had taken a few unwelcome steps toward it my encouragement not to come any closer seemed to do the trick and it gently backed away to continue chomping on grass.

As the Trimble gathered this last data set of the day I sat on a grassed hummock and watched the three cows whilst luxuriating myself in the warmth of the morning.  Once 15 minutes of data were gathered and stored I headed back to my car and called on good friends in Llanidloes; Eryl and Rita, to sit in the sun for a number of hours catching up with conversation and enjoying a lovely lunch, an excellent end to a good morning’s surveying.

Determining the position and height for the Great Rhos (SO 182 638) and Pegwn Mawr (SO 023 812) bylchau



The details between a hill’s summit and its critical bwlch are one that is seldom explored outside of being a list compiler or a surveyor.  This relationship is intrinsic to the hill, as it produces the drop value, which can be used as a part of the criteria for a hill’s classification.

For the uninitiated the critical bwlch is the point of least resistance when walking between summits or between valleys.  It is the lowest point reached when traversing from a hill’s summit to the next higher summit along the watershed.  When doing so, this point will also be the highest point reached when traversing between opposing valleys.

Also for the uninitiated; the drop value of the hill is the vertical height gain between the critical bwlch and the summit of the hill, with the caveat that each hill only has one critical bwlch, and no hill can share this point, therefore it is intrinsically linked to its respective hill’s summit.  However, the position of a hill’s critical bwlch can change and this is dependent upon its known height.

It is the last sentence above that is all important for the two hills that this article relates to; Great Rhos and Pegwn Mawr, as the listed height of each hill’s critical bwlch has been within 1m, and these critical points have also been swapped between the hills.  It was my aim today to finally determine which bwlch is higher and which is lower and therefore which bwlch is adjoined to Pegwn Mawr and which to Great Rhos.

Before detailing the survey result it may be prudent to briefly describe each hill and their position relating to one another and where each bwlch is also positioned.  I will also give brief details to their known heights and the history of their listed drop values.

Great Rhos is the highest hill in the Fforest Glud range of hills, which are also referred to as the Radnor Forest, it is positioned in the eastern part of mid Wales and has the small community of Maesyfed (New Radnor) and the A44 road to its south-east.

Pegwn Mawr is the highest hill in its own hill range and is also situated in the eastern part of mid Wales; it is positioned between the roads of the A470 to its north-west and the A483 to its east and has the towns of Llanidloes towards its west north-west and Y Drenewydd (Newtown) towards its north-east.

The two hills and their bylchau are orientated in a north-west direction, with the summit of Great Rhos being the most southerly, a northern traverse then bisects one bwlch which is positioned close to Llanbister Road Station, a north-westerly traverse then heads toward the summit of Pegwn Mawr, with a westerly traverse then bisecting the second bwlch which is positioned beside the A470 road and which has the town of Llanidloes towards its north-east and the small community of Llangurig towards its west.  Next higher ground is then to be found in the Pumlumon range of hills which are situated to the north-west of the second bwlch.

The main classification of each hill and their listed heights and the history of their listed drop values are given below:

Great Rhos and Pegwn Mawr have many classifications, two of which are Marilyn and Uchaf.  A Marilyn is a British hill that has 150m minimum drop irrespective of its height, with the list author being Alan Dawson.  An Uchaf is a Welsh hill that has a minimum height of 500m and minimum drop of 15m, with the list of Yr Uchafion co-authored by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams.

When the listing of Marilyns was first published in 1992 in The Relative Hills of Britain book no drop values were given, although Great Rhos was later listed with an estimated c 373m of drop when The Hewitts and Marilyns of Wales booklet was published by TACit Tables in February 1997.  This drop value was based on a 660m map summit height and estimated bwlch height of c 287m.

Pegwn Mawr was listed in the TACit Tables booklet with 300m of drop based on a 586m map summit height and a bwlch height of 286m.

When the listing of Yr Uchafion was re-evaluated these drop values and the position of their respective bylchau were examined and as Great Rhos is the higher of these two hills it should be listed with the lowest of the two bylchau.  Therefore either the heights of the bylchau were incorrect or their positioning had been transposed. 

At the time of the re-evaluation of Yr Uchafion the Marilyns listing had been published on DoBIH (Database of British and Irish Hills), and at that stage I was working closely with two of the editors of DoBIH in a survey team, therefore I informed them that their positioning of these bylchau had been transposed, resulting in these bylchau then being swapped.  This re-evaluation resulted in the following details being given to these two hills:

The above resulted in DoBIH swapping the positions of the bylchau but listing them as the same height, whilst the Yr Uchafion list differentiated each bwlch by height.  I do not know if Alan Dawson as the Marilyns author was informed of this by DoBIH, I did not inform him at the time but have done so with the results of my survey with the Trimble GeoXH 6000.

Before detailing the survey results I will give a brief synopsis of each bwlch, as the surrounds of each has undergone intrusion by man and until recently it was not known how this had affected their respective heights, or if the natural bwlch still survived.  The latter point is important as it is generally accepted that if the natural bwlch of a hill is still intact even if a cutting reduces the height of the hill to hill traverse, then the height of the natural bwlch is taken as a part of the drop value of the hill.

When the positions of these bylchau were swapped list compilers were in the main reliant upon spot heights and the 10m contour intervals on contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer and 1:50,000 Landranger maps.  However, the series of Ordnance Survey Six-Inch maps were now available online and these include many benchmark and levelled heights which are more accurate than the beige spot heights that appear on contemporary maps. 

The Ordnance Survey Interactive Coverage Map hosted on the Geograph website was also now available and this enlarged mapping gave many spot heights not shown on any other publicly available map and the facility of producing a ten figure grid reference for any given position.

These two forms of mapping, one old and one new, helped in determining the height of each bwlch.  The southerly bwlch has two options for its critical point, both of which are between 280m – 290m in height on contemporary maps, one of these is placed near a gravel track that heads to a farm named Maylord, the other is placed on or beside a rail track which had been laid in a cutting on the eastern side of the bwlch surrounds.  An old benchmark helped in estimating the height of this bwlch, although it was not placed where the bwlch was considered to be positioned and therefore its height was not agreed, however there was consensus that its critical point was positioned near the track that leads to Maylord.

The northerly bwlch has a disused railway cutting that bisects the surrounds of the bwlch in an east to west direction, with an elevated road that bisects this disused railway in a north-east to south-west direction, both have grazing fields on either side.  The 10m map contouring also gives this bwlch between 280m – 290m in height with contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 maps giving a 286m spot height on the road toward the north-east of the land that makes up that between the 280m – 290m contours, this spot height has been rounded up from a 285.3m and 285.5m (metric equivalent) height that appears on old Ordnance Survey base maps.  There are also a series of heights given to the old railway and road prior to when the rail bridge was demolished, however consensus could not be reached between the height or position of this bwlch, and the ones used by the then author of Yr Uchafion and DoBIH are quoted above.

Since the time when the position of these bylchau were swapped there has been dramatic changes in how such things are determined as people are now using the facility of Google cars to examine bylchau, and 5m contouring is now available on OS Maps, however the most revolutionary progress is that of LIDAR.

The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales, and this process has resulted in an almost endless stream of hill reclassifications.  With one of its major advantages being the facility to create coloured contouring at 0.001m intervals, this facility can be used to determine if natural bylchau still exist where intrusion by man has created either a road or railway that has been cut or elevated. 

As the southern bwlch was not covered by LIDAR the area was examined from the confines of a Google car and this quickly determined that the critical point was not placed beside the gravel track that leads to Maylord farm, as land from this point consistently went downhill toward the rail track on the hill to hill traverse.  This was substantiated by examining the 5m contours on OS Maps, this mapping has the bwlch position beside the gravel track leading to Maylord farm between 285m – 290m, whilst the bwlch on or beside the rail track is between 280m – 285m.

The northern bwlch is covered by LIDAR and extensive analysis determined that its critical natural point was intact and had not been obliterated either from the construction of the road or disused railway.  LIDAR analysis also determined that another natural bwlch still existed for this hill, but as this was higher on the hill to hill traverse it is not the critical point for this bwlch.  However, a lower point does exist on the hill to hill traverse and its position was determined by LIDAR analysis, this is placed in the remains of what is now an overgrown disused rail cutting.

Two points were surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000 at the southern bwlch, the first of which is where the 5m contouring on OS Maps place the critical bwlch, this is on the rail track.  OS Maps give the opposing valley to valley 280m contours to be positioned between SO 17712 71770 and SO 17871 71838, a mid-way point is conveniently placed where a gated track passes over the rail line, and this is where Trimble data were gathered from.

The second point surveyed at the southern bwlch is where the position of this bwlch had previously been listed, and this is beside the gravel track that leads to Maylord farm.  Visual confirmation that this is higher than the rail track substantiated examination of the land via a Google car and the 5m contouring on OS Maps.

Three points were surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000 at the northern bwlch, the first of which is where LIDAR analysis places the natural critical bwlch, this is to the north of the A470 road and the disused rail cutting, and is placed in a grazing field.

The second point surveyed is where LIDAR analysis places a remaining natural bwlch, but not the remaining natural bwlch, this is beside a gravelled track that has either been newly laid or widened, and therefore this ground has been recently disturbed by man.

The third point surveyed is where LIDAR analysis places the high point of the valley to valley traverse that takes in the old disused rail cutting, this is also on the northern side of the A 470 road, and it is now overgrown and on the day I visited was being grazed by three cows.

As the natural point of the northern bwlch is intact and is higher (3rd survey) than the southern bwlch (1st survey), this northern bwlch should be adjoined to the lower hill; Pegwn Mawr (585.2m summit at SO 02394 81245).  This gives Pegwn Mawr 299.3m of drop using the natural bwlch, or if using the disused rail cutting bwlch this gives Pegwn Mawr 301.5m of drop.

As the southern bwlch (1st survey) is lower than the northern bwlch (3rd survey, natural bwlch or 5th survey, disused rail cutting bwlch) this should be adjoined to the higher hill; Great Rhos (659.9m summit at SO 18213 63896).  This gives Great Rhos 378.6m of drop.
