The Remotest Hills of Wales are unique in concept and
challenge as no grouping of hills have been listed by ‘remoteness’ and no known
person has visited all the summits.
This grouping of hills is named ‘Y Pellennig’ as the Welsh
word pellennig means ‘distant’ or
‘remote’.
Qualification requires a minimum of 2.5km from summit to the
nearest paved public road and a minimum of 15m of drop (drop is the vertical
height gain from summit to bwlch
connecting the hill to next higher ground along the watershed).
The remotest hill in the whole of Wales is West Tump, which
is a 17m high wave-battered lump of rock 16.330km out in the Celtic Sea. The remotest hill of mainland Wales is the
467m high Tyle Garw in the Brecon Beacons National Park at 4.875km from the
nearest road.
Each name has been painstakingly researched taking in all
available Ordnance Survey maps, old Estate Survey maps, nautical charts and
many local inquiries.
