The Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru – Hill Reclassifications

The Welsh 500m P15s are the Welsh hills at or above 500m in height that have a minimum drop of 15m.  Accompanying the main P15 list are three sub lists; these are the 500m Subs, 490m Subs and the Double Subs with their criteria detailed in the respective Change Registers which are linked in their above titles, with details to this list given in the Introduction that was published on Mapping Mountains in November 2015.

The list is co-authored by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams and the posts that have appeared on Mapping Mountains detailing the additions, reclassifications and deletions to the main P15 list and the sub lists appear below presented chronologically in receding order.

Postscript: On the 7^th January 2023 it was announced that the sub hills accompanying the main listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru now take in just one category, this category is entitled the Welsh Highland Subs.  The criteria for which are all Welsh hills at and above 500m in height with 10m or more and below 15m of drop.

Therefore, the 490m Subs and 490m Double Subs have been dispensed with and the criteria for the 500m Subs that included Welsh hills with 14m or more and below 15m of drop, have been amended to include Welsh hills with 10m or more and below 15m of drop and their title changed to the Welsh Highland Subs.

Pt. 528.0m (SN 814 709) – Welsh Highland Sub deletion (105th reclassification)

 

There has been a deletion to the listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru, with the summit height, bwlch height and their locations, the drop and status of the hill derived from LIDAR analysis conducted by Aled Williams.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Aled Williams and Myrddyn Phillips

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 528.0m) notation and it is adjoined to the Carn yr Hyrddod group of hills, which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north and south-west, and the B4343 road to its west, and has the village of Pont-rhyd-y-groes towards the west north-west.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on the 529m summit spot height that appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map and an estimated c 519m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 528.0m summit height and a 518.4m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 9.6m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

There has been an addition to the listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru, with the summit height, bwlch height and their locations, the drop and status of the hill derived from LIDAR analysis conducted by Aled Williams.

The name the hill is listed by is Trawsallt and it is adjoined to the Carn yr Hyrddod group of hills, which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road and the B4574 road to its north, the B4343 road to its west and a minor road to its south, and has the village of Pont-rhyd-y-groes towards the north-west.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 7m of drop, based on the 564m summit spot height that appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map and an estimated c 557m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 564.5m summit height and a 552.8m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 11.7m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Aled Williams and Myrddyn Phillips

The name the hill is listed by is Pen y Bwlch it is adjoined to the Y Garn group of hills, which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-east and west, and the B4518 road to its south-east, and has the town of Rhaeadr Gwy towards the east north-east.

This hill was originally listed as a sub due to a basic levelling survey conducted by Myrddyn Phillips on the 17.08.05 resulting in a 47ft (14.3m) drop value, with the summit height listed as an estimated c 500m, based on interpolation of the small uppermost 500m ring contour that appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was included as a sub with an accompanying note stating:

LIDAR 2m DSM bwlch by AW. BLS by MP on 17/08/2005 giving 47ft (14.3m). Adding the BLS drop result to the bwlch height determined via LIDAR analysis gives a summit height of 500.1m. Summit height is inconsistent on OS maps, giving a range of 499m to 500m. Partial coverage LIDAR 2m DSM by AW gives 498.1m summit-area high point at SN 92831 66910. The OS 6" Map (1888) gives a 1633ft (497.7m) summit-area high point at SN 93067 66918.

However, it was not until full LIDAR coverage became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 499.6m summit height and a 485.6m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 14.05m of drop, with its height being insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

The name the hill is listed by is Foel Ddu and it is adjoined to the Y Garn group of hills, which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with the A44 road to its north-east and a minor road to its south-east, and has the village of Llangurig towards the east.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 8m of drop, based on an estimated c 530m summit height and an estimated c 522m bwlch height, with both heights based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping, with an accompanying note stating; Paper OS maps give a summit height of 532m, which isn't supported by contour data on the enlarged-scale online OS maps.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 532.1m summit height and a 520.9m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 11.2m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on a 532m summit height and an estimated c 522m bwlch height, with the latter based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

When the details for this hill were updated with data from basic levelling surveys conducted by Myrddyn Phillips, the drop was amended to 9.9m, based on a 32½ft/9.9m basic levelling survey conducted on the 24.09.04.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 535.5m summit height and a 525.5m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 10.0m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on the 514m summit spot height that appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map, and an estimated c 504m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

The name the hill is listed by is Llechwedd Crin and it is adjoined to the Pumlumon group of hills, which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-east and its south-west, the B4518 road to its east and the A44 road to its south, and has the village of Penffordd-las (Staylittle) towards the east.

After the original list that later became known as the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru was first compiled, this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on partial LIDAR coverage giving a 536m summit height and a 526m bwlch height.

When the details for this hill were updated with data from basic levelling surveys conducted by Myrddyn Phillips, the drop was amended to below 10m, based on a 31½ft/9.6m basic levelling survey conducted on the 22.05.04.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 536.2m summit height and a 525.6m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 10.6m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Aled Williams and Myrddyn Phillips

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 505.8m) notation and it is adjoined to the Esgair Wen group of hills, which are situated in the central part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-west and south, and has the small community of Pontrhydfendigaid towards the north-west and the town of Tregaron towards the west.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 9m of drop, based on the 1649ft (502.6m) height that appeared on the Ordnance Survey series of Six-Inch maps and an estimated c 494m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

The height that appeared on the Ordnance Survey series of Six-Inch maps was at odds with the 506m spot height that appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger and 1:25,000 Explorer map and which is positioned at SN 78576 59903, however this spot height was not supported by contemporary contour information on large scaled Ordnance Survey maps.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 505.8m summit height and a 492.4m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 13.5m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

The name the hill is listed by is Esgair Saeson and it is adjoined to the Esgair Wen group of hills, which are situated in the central part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-west and south, and has the small community of Pontrhydfendigaid towards the north-west and the town of Tregaron towards the west.

When the original list that later became known as the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru was first compiled, this hill was included as a Welsh Highland P15 and listed with an estimated c 24m of drop, based on the 500m summit spot height that appears on the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger and 1:25,000 Explorer map and an estimated c 476m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 10m contouring between 470m – 480m.

Since the original compilation of this list there have been a number of maps made available online.  Some of these are historic such as the series of Six-Inch maps on the National Library of Scotland website.  Whilst others were digitally updated such as the Ordnance Survey Vector Map Local that was hosted on the Geograph website and which was entitled the Interactive Coverage Map, whilst others are current and digitally updated such as the interactive mapping on the Magic Maps and WalkLakes websites.

The details for this hill were re-assessed when the Ordnance Survey Vector Map Local hosted on the Geograph website and which was entitled the Interactive Coverage Map became available online.  This mapping had many spot heights not on other publicly available Ordnance Survey maps and for this hill it had a 475m bwlch spot height positioned at SN 79101 60658, and when coupled with its 500m summit spot height these values gave this hill 25m of drop.

One of the resources recently available online is the mapping on the OS Maps website and the details for this hill were subsequently re-assessed against this mapping.  This is the replacement for OS Get-a-map and until recent times had contours at 5m intervals which were proving consistently more accurate compared to the 5m contours that sometimes appear on the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map and used to appear on the online Vector Map Local.  This mapping had bwlch contouring between 470m – 475m, with interpolation placing the height of the bwlch as an estimated c 473m, resulting in its drop value being amended to an estimated c 27m.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland P15 status is due to a LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 498.4m summit height and a 473.8m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 24.6m of drop, with its height insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 516.9m) notation and it is adjoined to the Esgair Wen group of hills, which are situated in the central part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north north-west and south, and has the small community of Pontrhydfendigaid towards the north-west and the town of Tregaron towards the west south-west.

When the original list that later became known as the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru was first compiled, this hill was not included as a Welsh Highland P15 as with no spot height adjoined to its uppermost 510m ring contour and bwlch contouring between 500m – 510m, the drop value could not be interpolated accurately to include it in this list.

Since the original compilation of this list there have been a number of maps made available online.  Some of these are historic such as the series of Six-Inch maps on the National Library of Scotland website.  Whilst others were digitally updated such as the Ordnance Survey Vector Map Local that was hosted on the Geograph website and which was entitled the Interactive Coverage Map, whilst others are current and digitally updated such as the interactive mapping on the Magic Maps and WalkLakes websites.

The details for this hill were re-assessed when the Ordnance Survey Vector Map Local hosted on the Geograph website and which was entitled the Interactive Coverage Map became available online.  This mapping had many spot heights not on other publicly available Ordnance Survey maps and for this hill it had a 517m summit spot height and a 502m bwlch spot height, with these values giving this hill 15m of drop and therefore it was included as a Welsh Highland P15.

The hill was subsequently surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000, resulting in a 516.3m summit height and a 501.4m bwlch height.  However, as the area of the bwlch is situated in conifer plantation it was decided to use an interpolated height and position from OS Maps.  This mapping gave contour intervals at 5m and showed a small 500m ring contour where the 502m spot height appears on the Ordnance Survey Interactive Coverage Map hosted on the Geograph website, data were collected from near this position resulting in a 501.4m height, but when doing so the authors were aware that land to the north-east was judged slightly higher and this is what the 5m contouring on the OS Maps website indicated.  Therefore, the hill was listed with an estimated c 14m of drop, resulting in its reclassification to Welsh Highland Sub status.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the reclassification of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to a LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 516.9m summit height and a 501.0m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 15.8m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be reinstated and classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

The hill was subsequently surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000, resulting in a 526.8m summit height and a 511.9m bwlch height.  Although this survey gave this hill 14.9m of drop, it was decided that the bwlch position was incorrect and therefore the hill was retained as a Welsh Highland P15.

Therefore, the reclassification of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to a Trimble GeoXH 6000 summit survey and LIDAR bwlch analysis, resulting in a 526.8m summit height and a 512.0m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 14.8m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

When the original list that later became known as the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru was first compiled, this hill was included as a Welsh Highland P15 and listed with 15m of drop, based on a 49½ft/15.1m basic levelling survey conducted by Myrddyn Phillips on the 24.09.04.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the reclassification of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 538.1m summit height and a 523.6m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 14.4m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the reclassification of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 550.4m summit height and a 536.0m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 14.4m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

There has been a reclassification to the listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru, with the summit height, bwlch height and their locations, the drop and status of the hill derived from LIDAR analysis conducted by Aled Williams.

The criteria for the list that this reclassification applies to are:

Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru – Welsh hills at or above 500m in height with 15m minimum drop, with an accompanying sub list entitled the Welsh Highland Subs, the criteria for which is all Welsh hills at or above 500m in height with 10m or more and below 15m of drop.  This list is authored by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams with the Introduction to the list published on Mapping Mountains in November 2015 and the latest update relating to the list published on Mapping Mountains in January 2023.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams

The name the hill is listed by is Foel Fach and it is adjoined to the Banc Llechwedd Mawr group of hills which are situated in the northern part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north and south, the A487 road to its west, the A44 road to its south and the B4518 road to its east, and has the town of Machynlleth towards the north.

When the original list that later became known as the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru was first compiled, this hill was included as a Welsh Highland P15 and listed with 15m of drop, based on a 50ft/15.2m basic levelling survey conducted by Myrddyn Phillips on the 01.11.05.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the reclassification of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 503.8m summit height and a 489.2m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 14.7m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland P15.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 686.3m) notation and it is adjoined to the Cadair Idris group of hills, which are situated in the south-western part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A3), and it is positioned with the A487 road to its south-east, and has the town of Dolgellau towards the north.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on the 2250ft (685.8m) summit height that appears on the Ordnance Survey series of Six-Inch maps and an estimated c 676m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

When the sub list was updated with details from basic levelling surveys conducted by Myrddyn Phillips the details for this hill were re-evaluated and it was listed with 10.4m of drop, based on a basic levelling survey conducted on the 10.10.98 which gave this hill 34.0ft of drop.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 686.3m summit height and a 678.1m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 8.2m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 657.9m) notation and it is adjoined to the Aran Fawddwy group of hills, which are situated in the south-western part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A3), and it is positioned with the A494 road to its north-west and minor roads to its south and east, and has the village of Dinas Mawddwy towards the south.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 8m of drop, based on the 657m summit spot height that appears on the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map and an estimated c 649m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

When the sub list was updated with details from basic levelling surveys conducted by Myrddyn Phillips the details for this hill were re-evaluated and it was listed with 10.8m of drop, based on a basic levelling survey conducted on the 19.05.98 which gave this hill 35.3ft of drop, resulting in the addition of this hill to the sub list.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 657.9m summit height and a 648.1m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 9.8m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 844.2m) notation and it is adjoined to the Aran Fawddwy group of hills, which are situated in the south-western part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A3), and it is positioned with the A494 road to its north-west and a minor road to its north-east, and has the village of Llanuwchllyn towards the north.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on the 844m summit spot height that appeared on the enlarged scale Ordnance Survey map available online and an estimated c 834m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared on online mapping.

When the sub list was updated with details from basic levelling surveys conducted by Myrddyn Phillips the details for this hill were re-evaluated and it was listed with 8.5m of drop, based on a basic levelling survey conducted on the 19.09.98 which gave this hill 28ft of drop, resulting in the deletion of this hill from the sub list.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, resulting in an 844.2m summit height and an 833.6m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 10.5m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 12m of drop, based on the 551m summit spot height that appears on the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger and 1:25,000 Explorer map and an estimated c 539m bwlch height, based on interpolation of 5m contouring that appeared online.

The name the hill is listed by is Bryn Ceffyl, and it is adjoined to the Arenig Fawr group of hills, which are situated in the central part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A2), and it is positioned with the A4212 road to its north, and has the town of Y Bala towards the east.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 7m of drop, based on a 505m summit height and an estimated c 498m bwlch height.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 510.0m) notation and it is adjoined to the Arenig Fawr group of hills, which are situated in the central part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A2), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-east and the A494 road to its south-east, and has the town of Y Bala towards the east north-east.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with 9m of drop, based on the 508m summit spot height which appears on the contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger and 1:25,000 Explorer map and the 499.0m bwlch height ascertained from 1m DSM LIDAR analysis.

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 510.8m) notation and it is adjoined to the Arenig Fawr group of hills, which are situated in the central part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A2), and it is positioned with a minor road to its west and south-east, with the A470 road farther to its west and the A494 road farther to its south-east, and has the town of Dolgellau towards the south-west.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 9m of drop, based on a 510m summit height and an estimated c 501m bwlch height, with the latter based on interpolation of 5m contouring available online.

The name the hill is listed by is Graig Fach and it is adjoined to the Arenig Fawr group of hills, which are situated in the central part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A2), and it is positioned with a minor road to its south south-east and the A494 road farther to its south-east, and has the small community of Rhyd-y-main towards the south south-east.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with 10.2m of drop, based on a basic levelling survey conducted by Myrddyn Phillips on the 10.04.06, and listed with a 510m summit height and a 500m bwlch height, with an accompanying note stating that analysis of numerical data on various scales of Ordnance Survey maps give this hill an estimated c 9m of drop.  Therefore, it was included as a Welsh Highland Sub when the drop value of the subs was agreed upon and revised in July 2020.

There has been an addition to the listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru, with the summit height, bwlch height and their locations, the drop and status of the hill derived from LIDAR analysis and subsequently confirmed by a Trimble GeoXH 6000 survey; the former conducted by Aled Williams and the latter by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams

The name the hill is listed by is Esgair Pentanau, and it is adjoined to the Carn yr Hyrddod group of hills, which are situated in the north-western part of South Wales (Region B, Sub-Region B1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its north-east and the B4343 road to its west, and has the town of Rhaeadr Gwy (Rhayader) towards the east.

The contemporary Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map gives this hill a 503m summit spot height, with bwlch contouring between 490m – 500m.  However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with 8.7m of drop based on analysis of the available 2m DSM LIDAR model.  When new Welsh LIDAR became available in April 2023 this hill was again analysed via LIDAR, now using the more accurate 1m DSM model.

LIDAR analysis using 1m DSM gives this hill over 10m of drop and therefore qualifying for Welsh Highland Sub status, and as this hill had now been surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000, it is this result that is being prioritised for this hill.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis, with confirmation via a subsequent Trimble GeoXH 6000 survey, resulting in a 504.2m summit height and a 493.2m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 11.0m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams

The hill is being listed by the point (Pt. 872.3m) notation and it is adjoined to the Glyder Fawr group of hills, which are situated in the north-western part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A1), and it is positioned with the A5 road to its north and the A4086 road to its south, and has the village of Capel Curig towards the east.

When the initial P10 sub list was completed in June 2020 this hill was listed with an estimated c 10m of drop, based on an 873m summit height and an estimated c 863m bwlch height, and therefore included as a Welsh Highland Sub when the drop value of the subs was agreed upon and revised in July 2020.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

LIDAR analysis gave this hill under 10m of drop required for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub, and as this hill had now been surveyed with the Trimble GeoXH 6000, it is this result that is being prioritised for this hill.

Therefore, the deletion of this hill from Welsh Highland Sub status is due to LIDAR analysis and subsequently confirmed by a Trimble GeoXH 6000 survey, resulting in an 872.3m summit height and an 867.0m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 5.3m of drop, which is insufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.

Pen y Castell (SH 724 688) – Welsh Highland Sub addition (71st reclassification)

 

There has been an addition to the listing of the Welsh Highlands – Uchafion Cymru, with the summit height, bwlch height and their locations, the drop and status of the hill derived a combination of an optical level survey conducted by Graham Jackson and Myrddyn Phillips, a Leica RX1250 survey conducted by Alan Dawson and LIDAR analysis conducted by Aled Williams.

Welsh Highlands - Uchafion Cymru by Myrddyn Phillips and Aled Williams

The name the hill is listed by is Pen y Castell and it is adjoined to the Carnedd Llywelyn group of hills, which are situated in the north-western part of North Wales (Region A, Sub-Region A1), and it is positioned with a minor road to its east north-east, and the B5106 road and the A470 road farther to its east, and has the village of Llanbedrycennin towards the east.

The summit of this hill was surveyed by optical level from its near higher summit on the 9^th April 2010 by Graham Jackson and Myrddyn Phillips and determined to be 2.43m lower.  The higher summit positioned at SH 72187 68880 was subsequently surveyed by Alan Dawson using a Leica RX1250 on the 14^th June 2017, resulting in a 623.52m summit height.  Therefore, the lower summit relative to the higher is 621.09m in height.

However, it was not until LIDAR became available that the bwlch details for this hill could be accurately re-assessed.  The LIDAR (Light Detection & Ranging) technique produced highly accurate height data that is now freely available for much of England and Wales.

Therefore, the addition of this hill to Welsh Highland Sub status is due to an optical level survey, a Leica RX1250 survey and LIDAR analysis, resulting in a 621.1m summit height and a 611.0m bwlch height, with these values giving this hill 10.1m of drop, which is sufficient for it to be classified as a Welsh Highland Sub.
